Maintaining good oral hygiene with braces can be challenging, but it’s essential for keeping your teeth and gums healthy. With brackets and wires in the way, plaque and food particles can easily become trapped, increasing the risk of cavities, gum disease, and discoloration. Here’s a guide to keeping your teeth clean and healthy throughout your orthodontic journey.

1. Brush Thoroughly and Frequently

With braces, it’s essential to brush after every meal and snack to remove any trapped food and prevent plaque buildup. Follow these tips:

  • Use a soft-bristled or electric toothbrush: A soft-bristled brush or an electric toothbrush with an orthodontic head can help clean around brackets and wires effectively.
  • Use fluoride toothpaste: Fluoride strengthens enamel and helps protect teeth against decay.
  • Brush at a 45-degree angle: Angle your brush toward the gumline and braces to reach as much of the tooth’s surface as possible.
  • Brush for at least two minutes: Divide time equally between the front, back, and chewing surfaces of each tooth.

2. Floss Daily with Special Tools

Flossing with braces may feel tricky, but it’s vital to remove plaque and food particles from between the teeth and under the gumline. Here are some tools that make flossing easier:

  • Orthodontic floss threaders: These tools help you thread floss under the braces wires, so you can floss each tooth properly.
  • Water flosser: A water flosser uses a stream of water to remove plaque and debris. It’s effective for cleaning between teeth and around brackets, especially if traditional flossing is challenging.
  • Interdental brushes: These small brushes can fit between brackets and under wires to remove food particles and plaque in hard-to-reach areas.

3. Rinse with Mouthwash

An antibacterial, alcohol-free mouthwash can help reduce plaque buildup and keep your gums healthy. Look for a fluoride rinse to provide extra protection against cavities. Rinsing daily can also help wash away any particles that may have been missed during brushing and flossing.

4. Avoid Certain Foods

To prevent damage to your braces and keep your teeth clean, avoid sticky, chewy, and hard foods that can get stuck in your brackets or damage wires. Some common foods to avoid include:

  • Sticky candies like caramel and taffy
  • Hard foods like nuts, popcorn, and hard candies
  • Sugary foods and drinks that contribute to plaque buildup

5. Regular Dental Check-ups and Cleanings

Regular dental visits are essential for anyone with braces. Dentists can clean areas you might miss and catch any potential issues before they become more severe. It’s usually recommended to see your dentist every six months, but some orthodontists may suggest more frequent cleanings while you have braces.

6. Use a Proxabrush for Extra Cleaning

A proxabrush, also known as an interdental brush, is a small, cone-shaped brush designed to clean around the brackets and wires. It’s particularly helpful for removing food particles that can become trapped around the braces.

7. Pay Attention to Your Gum Health

Healthy gums are crucial for maintaining good oral health, especially with braces. Gently brush your gums and the gumline to prevent gingivitis and inflammation. Massaging the gums with a toothbrush or using an antibacterial mouth rinse can also keep them in good condition.

8. Drink Plenty of Water

Drinking water helps rinse away food particles and bacteria throughout the day. Aim to drink water after meals to reduce plaque buildup and keep your mouth hydrated.

Maintaining oral hygiene with braces requires some extra effort, but the results are worth it. With diligent care, you’ll be able to keep your teeth and gums healthy and avoid complications. By following these tips, you’re setting the foundation for a beautiful, straight smile once your braces come off!
